These tubular beds were made from a pre-colonial process called lost-wax casting, widely practiced in Africa for centuries prior to the arrival of European explorers in the late 1400s. Beginning with carving the design in wax, and creating a clay mold around it, whereby the wax melts when the clay is fired. The liquid metal is then poured into the mold until it cools.
